Music magazine: Front cover evaluation.

Here i will evaluate my final front cover against Sugar magazine - which i tried to base mine around- by picking out key elements of both, and comparing them.

Although my title features more colours than Sugar's, it is still bright and bold, which would mean it would grab the readers attention. Furthermore, both are quite large, which would also grab the readers attention. Both are quite simple designs.

On both magazines there is a big feature, that inside a shape of some sort. The title of that feature is rarely on a straight line, and so in an attempt to incorporate Sugar's use of text that is placed at an angle, i rotated my own, so that the words would be on a diagonal slant. The text on both features is plain, and black and white, as the colour comes from the background and outline.

The subject of the main feature inside often has their name in bold, with a subheading underneath explaining what the focus of their article will be. On the left, i have put my artists name in black and white, made it bold, and put it in a bigger font that the subheading. In contrast, although Sugar has also made their artists name bold, and in a big font, they have put the colour of the name, and kept the subheading plain, leaving it white.

On every Sugar magazine, there is a small feature. As they are a fashion and gossip magazine, they have offered quizzes, and articles on school and boys. As my own magazine is a music one, i decided to advertise free posters of various musical artists, one or two that don't focus entirely on alternative-rock, and indie music, offering those that don't only like those genres something else to benefit from.
As my magazine is a music magazine, i placed various artist names on my top banner, whereas Sugar have advertised a feature that allows them to meet their "perfect match". Both are fairly plain, in a small font, capital letters to ensure that it is seen, and in mostly black to ensure attention is mainly focused on the main article.
Each cover has a quote from the person who their main magazine article is focused on. Most are in black and white, as it is only a snippet of what is inside. They are mainly short and to the point, which is different to mine, as mine is much longer. Although mine is a fair bit longer than Sugar's, i think it offers an insight into what my artist finds important, as well as offering an idea of what the interview will contain.

Both magazines have slightly unconventional poses, as they both present a cheeky and fun attitude. While Hayley Williams (Paramore) smiles broadly, she is also winking, which would obviously attract the reader as it seems very welcoming as well as entertaining. My model also gives off a witty and cheeky feel, as she grins and pretends to balance her ukelele on her finger. Neither model is standing completely straight, as Hayley is folding her arms, with her head cocked to the right, while models head was originally tilted to the left slightly, as her arms crossed over her body to hold her instrument. Rotating her image also helped to produce the same effect as Hayley's pose, as if the models were just standing straight up, with plain expressions on their faces, they would look as inviting as they do now.
